Where to eat pöç kebab in Kayseri?

Updated: 1 min read

Pöç

Pöç (slow-cooked oxtail) is one of Kayseri’s lesser-known but dizzyingly delicious specialities. In Kayseri it is described as the dish that “pulls the tail off the calf”. The bony meat from the calf’s tail is placed in a clay pot (güveç) and cooked over a low flame for about 15 hours. It is served on traditional copper plates with iç pilav (rice pilaf) and roasted tomatoes and peppers. It is especially popular in the winter months with domestic and foreign tourists who come to Mount Erciyes to ski.

Where to eat pöç in Kayseri?

Bağdat Pöç – Tandır

The first place that comes to mind when you think of pöç is Bağdat Pöç. It has the feel of a traditional tradesmen’s restaurant (esnaf lokantası), with a friendly atmosphere. The food and the service are very good. After your pöç, you can try nevzine, one of Kayseri’s traditional desserts. Ask whether they still have pöç before you go, because it can run out by around 3–4 o’clock.

Altınsaray Pöç – Tandır

At Altınsaray, another pöç restaurant with a modest atmosphere, the size of the portions and the flavour will always stay with you. When you come back to Kayseri a second time, you’ll want to return here again. Be sure to call before you go, though: because the pöç is cooked for 15 hours, it runs out by around 4–5 o’clock.
